In order to work with an animal as intelligent and sensitive as the horse we must first work on ourselves.

The 6 I's of Horsemanship

Because It All Starts With You

Horsemanship is often taught as a collection of techniques, exercises and training methods. While those things are important, I believe they are only part of the picture.

The greatest lessons horses have taught me have very little to do with lead changes, trailer loading or competition results. They have taught me about awareness, responsibility, emotional regulation, communication and personal growth.

Horses are constantly giving us information. Through their behaviour, body language and responses, they tell us what they are experiencing in each moment. The challenge is learning how to listen, interpret that information and make thoughtful decisions rather than reacting emotionally or relying on assumptions.

I developed The 6 I's of Horsemanship as a decision-making and emotional regulation framework to help horse owners navigate challenges with greater clarity and confidence.

Rather than asking, "How do I fix this?" the framework encourages us to slow down and ask better questions.

What is happening?

What does it mean?

What matters?

What am I trying to achieve?

What am I going to do?

What did I learn?

These six questions form the foundation of the 6 I's:

Instinct – Recognising what is happening.

Intuition – Understanding what it means.

Integrity – Identifying what matters.

Intention – Defining what you are trying to achieve.

Initiate – Taking purposeful action.

Improve – Reflecting, learning and refining.

The framework can be applied to any challenge, from training and performance goals to behavioural concerns, confidence struggles, horse welfare decisions and everyday horsemanship.

At its heart, the 6 I's are built on a simple belief:

You cannot solve a problem you haven't accurately identified, and lasting progress begins when we are willing to learn, reflect and take responsibility for our role in the partnership.

Because horsemanship isn't just about training horses.

It's about developing the awareness, understanding and skills to become the kind of person our horses need us to be.

And that is why it all starts with you.

Why I Created The 6 I's

I've spent most of my life around horses.

Over the years I've worked with horses of different ages, personalities and abilities, and like every horse owner, I've experienced my fair share of challenges, setbacks and moments of self-doubt.

What fascinated me was that the biggest breakthroughs rarely came from finding a new technique. More often, they came from developing a better understanding of what was really happening beneath the surface.

The more I learned about horse behaviour, nervous systems and communication, the more I began to see the connection between horse and human. Our horses are constantly responding to the information we provide, both intentionally and unintentionally.

I realised that many of the challenges we face aren't simply horse problems. They're often problems of awareness, understanding, confidence, decision-making and communication.

The 6 I's of Horsemanship emerged as a way to organise those lessons into a practical framework. A framework that helps horse owners slow down, think clearly and navigate challenges with greater confidence and compassion.

Because when we learn to better understand ourselves, we become better equipped to understand our horses.

The Round Pen

Coming Soon

The Round Pen is the future home of the 6 I's of Horsemanship.

Built around the 6 I's framework, it is an online learning community being created for horse owners who want more than quick fixes and training tricks. A place to better understand your horse, build confidence in your decision-making and develop a deeper connection through thoughtful horsemanship.

Just as a physical round pen provides a safe space for learning, communication and understanding, The Round Pen is being designed as a place where horse owners can slow down, ask questions and continue developing their horsemanship journey.

Inside, you'll find education, resources and practical tools designed to help you move through each stage of the 6 I's framework:

From recognising what is happening, to understanding why, making informed decisions, taking purposeful action and reflecting on the lessons learned along the way.
