Sound For Vocals
Why Getting Your Sound Right Matters as a Vocalist
One of the most overlooked parts of singing live isn’t your voice. It’s your sound.
As vocalists, we rely on what we hear to guide how we sing. If your foldback, monitor, or PA sound isn’t right, you’ll often find yourself compensating without even realising it.
When you can’t hear yourself clearly, the natural response is to push harder. You sing louder, strain more, and work much harder than you need to. Not only can this lead to vocal fatigue, but it can also affect your pitch, timing, confidence, and overall performance.
A good sound setup allows you to relax into your voice. You can hear the nuances, control your dynamics, and trust your technique. Instead of fighting to be heard, you can focus on connecting with the song and the audience.
I’ve noticed that when my sound is clear and balanced, I don’t have to force anything. My voice feels stronger at the end of the night, I sing more consistently, and I actually enjoy performing more.
Everyone is different and we all have our preferences, for me I like to hear my vocals as close to how they would be front of house so I know how much room I have to move vocally.
If you’re a singer, spend some time learning what settings work for your voice. Don’t be afraid to ask for adjustments. A little less muddy, a little more clarity, and the right amount of vocal presence can make a huge difference.
Your voice is your instrument. Make sure you’re hearing it properly and not overdoing it. We have great equipment available, use it!
