Boundaries In Business

Boundaries in business are something I’m still learning

I used to think boundaries in business were mostly about other people, clients, expectations, time, availability.

Lately I’ve realised the harder (and more important) boundaries are the ones I set with myself. This is especially hard when you work for yourself! When you start a business you have to hustle and grind to get it off the ground but it’s hard to take your foot off the accelerator when you haven’t ever been in a period of business when you not only can but have to to make it sustainable and move into the next phase.

I’m still learning how to not overextend just because I can.
Still learning how to stop equating my worth with productivity.
Still learning how to listen to my body instead of pushing through it.
Still learning that rest isn’t something you earn after burnout, it’s something you need to prevent it.

As a sole trader, it’s easy to convince yourself that every open hour should be filled, every opportunity should be taken, every gap should be justified. I’ve done that. And it comes at a cost.

Sustainability, for me, is no longer about growth at all costs.
It’s about creating a business that I can show up to well - not just show up to.

That means setting limits on my own behavior, not just other people’s.
Working fewer hours.
Building in recovery time.
Pricing in a way that respects my energy.
Letting myself be human.

I don’t have this perfected. I’m practicing it.
And some weeks I get it right, and some weeks I don’t.

But I know this much: a business that relies on me being exhausted isn’t sustainable.
Protecting my energy isn’t selfish, it’s necessary.

Boundaries aren’t about doing less because you care less.
They’re about doing less so you can keep caring, about yourself and others!

I am learning that it is equally important to refill my cup so I can show up as my best self. If this reflection resonates with you perhaps you need to reevaluate your boundaries with yourself and your work so you can sustain a level of quality and take care of yourself.
