Why I Use Iconoclast Boots on My Horses
One question I get asked fairly regularly is why I ride my horses in boots.
For me, it comes down to one simple idea: if I can reduce the risk of an injury, why wouldn't I?
Horses are incredible athletes, but they're also very good at finding ways to hurt themselves. Whether it's clipping a fetlock with the opposite hoof, standing on themselves, slipping, or simply making an awkward step, accidents happen. We can't prevent everything, but we can make thoughtful decisions that help stack the odds in our favour.
Protective boots are one of those decisions for me.
Why I Chose Iconoclast
After doing plenty of research, I chose Iconoclast Equine Support Boots because I wanted a boot that was designed to provide lower limb support as well as protection from knocks and interference.
Like any piece of equipment, they're not a miracle fix. They don't replace good training, correct hoof care, well-fitting tack or proper conditioning. They're simply another tool that helps me look after my horses while they're working.
Why I Use Them on Young Horses
One time I almost always use boots is when I'm starting a young horse under saddle.
Learning to carry a rider is a huge physical adjustment. Young horses are working muscles in new ways, learning to balance with extra weight and figuring out where to put their feet. It's completely normal for them to be a little uncoordinated while they build strength and confidence.
During this stage, I like having that extra layer of protection.
The boots help protect against interference if they brush one leg with another or accidentally stand on themselves, while also providing the lower limb support that I chose them for as their workload increases.
My goal is always to progress young horses at a pace they're physically and mentally ready for. The boots don't replace good preparation, they simply become part of setting the horse up for success.
They're Not Just for Young Horses
I also use boots on more established horses, particularly when we're doing ridden work where there's a higher chance of interference or we're asking a little more of them physically.
Every horse is different, and every ride is different. I don't believe in using the same equipment just because it's become a habit. I prefer to look at the individual horse, the job we're doing and make a decision based on that.
An Added Benefit
Living in rural Western Australia, snakes are always in the back of my mind, particularly during the warmer months.
Protective boots certainly aren't snake-proof, but they do provide an extra layer over the lower legs, which gives me a little more peace of mind when I'm riding through paddocks or areas where snakes could be present.
It's not the reason I use them, but it's an added benefit that I appreciate.
It All Comes Back to Good Decisions
One thing I talk about often is that horsemanship isn't about finding one perfect method or one perfect product.
It's about learning to make good decisions.
For me, using protective boots is one of those decisions. They're one part of a much bigger picture that includes good training, appropriate conditioning, quality nutrition, regular hoof care and paying attention to what each individual horse needs.
Could I ride without them? Of course.
But if I can give my horses a little extra protection and support while they're doing their job, then that's a choice I'm happy to make.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to give every horse the best opportunity to stay sound, comfortable and confident for years to come.
